AMT Commodities Corner: The Fed, Energy Inflation, Forex, Gold, Politics and Coffee

The Need for Confident Sounding Policy From Fed Chair Kevin Warsh

Forgive me please if the following appears to be a vacuum trying to suck a complex web of risk events and their effects on the speculative nature of commodities and Forex. Yet, the state of the world means that technical and fundamentals are clashing significantly and it would be foolish to make believe influences do not exists. Today the Federal Reserve will deliver its FOMC Statement (and the word statement is emphasized because no interest rate hike is expected).

However, considering the surprise delivered from Brazil via its election results on Sunday and reactions in the Ibovespa and USD/BRL afterwards, it might be wise too brace for the potential of additional dynamics. But I do not want to digress, because price action and velocity are natural parts of the financial world and in fact act as a barometer regarding how economic and political outlooks are converging.

Gold Price as of 28th October and Viridian Commodity Forecast

Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh remains under a bright light. He didn’t exactly take the helm of the U.S central bank in the most tranquil of times. Thus, it is difficult to blame him quite yet for the mess and quandary the Federal Reserve finds itself trying to navigate. Energy costs remain high and will so for the foreseeable future. The Iran war looks a long way from being solved in the coming month (‘months’ may be the more appropriate word choice), although saber-rattling and outright military escalation may in fact be coming sooner rather than later. This depending on President Trump and his loud threats and ability to follow up on his rhetoric and negotiation methods, and or the ability of the Iranian and all other factions converging on a compromise (which doesn’t looking forthcoming).

Meaning if WTI Crude Oil remains at its current price levels over $100.00 consistently, this as war drums bang it will not be a surprise. According to Viridian Commodity Intelligence based on shipping and supply and other logical predictions which factor in higher prices as as caution reigns, support levels in the Crude Oil sector will likely remain durable until an end game is reached with results large players feel comfortable within – including nations – and good luck trying to achieve this type of solution folks. Which brings us back to Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh and other FOMC officials who understand inflation is being caused by geo-political upheavals creating higher energy costs. There is little the Fed can do to fight expensive fuel costs and the effect on logistics, manufacturing and agriculture remains a losing game until a conclusion of the Iranian quagmire is attained.

WTI Crude Oil Price as of 28th October and Viridian Forecast

Thus, even as the Fed has shown no signs of raising interest rates today, the next FOMC decision on the 9th of December will remain under the same storm clouds. The energy situation is not likely to have been fixed by then. Warsh must deliver a determined policy stance and tell the public (and investors) that he remains confident in the U.S economy as it faces inflation caused by energy prices; the economy may be challenged in the mid-term but no additional interest rate hikes are planned. Except for the problem, Kevin Warsh has not expressed this viewpoint forcefully yet – creating USD centric strength in the meantime.

Gold Recovery Coming Or Wishful Biased Thoughts?

A bold Federal Reserve stance would potentially help ease U.S Treasury yields too. The prevailing fragility in equity indices may also press more investors into U.S bonds which would supposedly help yields come down a bit too. And this brings up the specter of gold which is producing a battle for value near the $4,050.00 mark as of this writing and has gone below $4,000.00 recently. Even in the wake of global risk events the price of the precious metal has looked strained (nixing notions of a safe haven momentarily). USD centric price action has created headwinds against gold, along with the elevated U.S Treasury yields. However, support levels have looked reasonably stable near $4000,00 and the price of the commodity appears undervalued from my (possibly gold bug) eyes.

USD/JPY Implications and Gameplan

Forex will remain tricky short and near-term, particularly for the USD/JPY, as the the Fed makes its rhetoric stance today and the Bank of Japan speaks on Friday. Japanese Yen traders may have taken advantage of oversold conditions which appeared late last week, but retail traders should note that volatility will remain a steady diet as large players speculate and seek additional momentum waves over the next two and half days.

The higher realms of the USD/JPY are not likely to disappear anytime soon. However, retail traders need to be wary of actual interventions from the Bank of Japan in order to counter blind buying of the currency pair by large players and financial houses based on their poor outlooks for the Japanese Yen based on their lack of confidence in BoJ policy.

Coffee Trading and the USD/BRL

From the commodity standpoint both WTI Crude Oil and gold have definite causation and in some sense their trading realms feel as if they are known for speculators who have the ability to tackle risk taking with solid tactics. The same cannot be said exactly for Coffee, which could face complications and shock waves potentially in the coming days and weeks as growers and producers, wholesalers and their large buyers have to deal with the potential of a weakened Brazilian Real.

The BRL was trading near 5.0500 in a relatively calm and bearish trend within the USD/BRL into last Friday and all seemed like it would remain tranquil after the weekend. And then came the early Monday surprise (for many – including myself) via results from the Brazilian election in which Lula da Silva won another term as President. The USD/BRL before Forex trading begins today is near 5.3500. Coffee traders may be bracing for some shockwaves if the value of the currency pair doesn’t recover to lower ground in the coming days and week. No Brazil is not the sole producer of Robusta (and Conilon) and Arabica Coffee, but its influence in markets remains important – even if solid supply is known to exists in other global locales.

USD/BRL: Anticipating Brazilian Election Results and a Liberal Party Victory

Flavio Bolsonaro Appears Set to Become the Next President of Brazil

Brazil will conduct the second round of its elections this coming Sunday on the 25th of October. Flavio Bolsonaro is predicted to win the election handily. No second place presidential candidate has ever comeback after the initial vote and beaten the first place finisher in the 2nd round of the direct elections which was implemented in 1989.

Financial institutions appear to favor a Liberal Party victory over Lula da Silva’s Workers’ Party. If Flavio Bolsonaro wins the vote as expected on Sunday he will have strong coalition powers in the National Congress as a whole, including the upper house Federal Senate with conservative members that is expected to include 45 to 50 approval votes depending on the issue out of 81 collective seats. The USD/BRL closed yesterday’s trading near the 5.0525 vicinity.

USD/BRL One Year Chart as of 23 October 2026

Brazilian Real’s Performance Has Been Solid Since December 2024

The USD/BRL is traversing lower ratios that were challenged momentarily in early August, late July and saw sustained lower action in May of this year with depths touching the 4.9000 area briefly. The Central Bank of Brazil has leadership via Lula da Silva’s choice of Gabriel Galipolo as the Governor who will serve until the 31st of December 2028.

Financial institutions have shown faith in the Brazilian Central Bank as it maintained interest rates and did not succumb to the wishes of many from the Workers Party who had lobbied for a lowering of borrowing costs as inflation ran high. The USD/BRL has performed well since touching highs around 6.2500 in December of 2024. While the USD/BRL has been correlating with the broad Forex market to a degree, reaching the 5.2500 realm on the 1st of October, the Brazilian Real has shown more fortitude than the EUR, GBP and has done better that the South African Rand against the USD the past handful of weeks.

Geo-Political Implications of a Flavio Bolsonaro Victory

Optimism in Brazilian financial institutions regarding a government victory by Flavio Bolsonaro who is seen as pro-business (and certainly is not a socialist) is viewed as a positive by global investors too. The geo-political relationship between Brazil and other nations will be captivating if Bolsonaro wins Sunday’s presidential race. Brazil maintains an enormous trading relationship with China and its membership in BRICS is considered very important. These political relationships should be watched closely.

Brazil’s relationship with South Africa may also be tested quickly as Flavio Bolsonaro imposes a more conservative approach regarding his worldview. Bolsonaro is certainly an ally of President Trump. Brazil’s relationship with the majority of conservative leadership in South America will be dynamic and worth giving attention as it improves. The USD/BRL via behavioral sentiment could find itself testing additional lower values in the coming months. A free enterprise surge from Brazil will create a more vibrant economic landscape in South America, provided corruption is fought and transparency is delivered.

Cautious Global Markets as Optimism Engulfs Brazil

Cautious global investment certainly continues to create problems in equity markets. However, the Ibovespa Index of Brazil has performed exceptionally well the past year, even though it suffered a slight downturn yesterday it remains within sight of all-time highs. The results on the Ibovespa and the USD/BRL considering the predicted election outcome this Sunday will be important for retail traders to monitor.

Speculators need to keep in mind a Liberal Party victory has been factored into the value of both trading assets already, meaning some profit taking could transpire early until additional positive waves of enthusiasm engulf the marketplace…….and then eventually sees euphoria erode back into realistic outlooks and correlations with global mechanisms again.

Paying For Celebrations Via Profit Taking

Traders of the USD/BRL may want to pursue the currency pair in a speculative manner today and early next week, but they need to remain tactical and not allow overly ambitious targets guide their wishful thinking. Bias needs to be eliminated and USD/BRL traders should not indulge in leveraged positions which could get out of hand quickly if sudden sentiment shifts strike via larger players and financial institutions, particularly if they cash out winning positions (this to pay for some victory celebrations should the mood strike). The USD/BRL appears to be in a solid position to continue move lower via positive outlooks for business enterprise in Brazil, but traders should remain realistic and not step out ahead of the parade unless they have deep pockets and can demonstrate patience.

A Gap Higher Amidst Over-Exuberant Retail Trader Ambitions

Early Tuesday’s price action in the USD/BRL did see the 5.0000 realm come into sight, but an upwards wave developed and Thursday’s opening did produce a gap higher which tested values near 5.0575 momentarily. Yes, conditions appear ripe for exuberance to help the Brazilian Real become stronger against the USD, but retail traders need to practice risk management at all times.

Day and Institutional Traders Suffering Nervous Conditions

Day and Institutional Traders Suffering Nervous Conditions

Market price action has caused quite a few interesting interpretations of the prices being demonstrated in Forex, gold and equity markets recently. The USD/INR is now at record heights, the USD/ZAR is back above 19.00000 and the USD/BRL is again near the 5.0000 ratio.

USD/INR One Month Chart as of 16th August 2023

While Forex traders around the world look for clues as to why their local currencies are suffering and are likely blaming domestic policy from their own governments and central banks, they should remember the larger global financial markets tend to move in a unified sphere. Domestic concerns are a real cause for market action often, but when global sentiment becomes nervous the larger force of institutional financial houses shake the ground.

Correlations exists worldwide because of behavioral sentiment ruling outlooks over the near, mid and long-term in the marketplace. While we like to put our faith in the financial markets as an all knowing entity, this is far from the truth. Humans who react to nervous conditions and also have bias are the ones still making decisions in financial houses, they are the ones giving orders to their programmers via their trading software which is largely geared to follow perceived trends these institutions deem important.

USD/ZAR One Month Chart as of 16th August 2023

Most financial institutions are not speculative in nature, day and even longer term retail traders should remember this point. Most institutions are trying very hard not to ‘speculate’, they are simply positioning per their outlooks based on their understanding of the trading landscape. Whispers of potential downgrades from U.S rating agencies on larger corporate banks yesterday sent a shudder through the broad markets, economic data and rumors swirling about China are not helping either. The current volatility in the broad markets is not welcomed warmly by financial institutions.

When price velocity accelerates and volatility flourishes in highly charged trading situations, this suggests financial institutions are nervous and not able to find comfortable positions. Conflicting ‘opposite’ positions from other larger players are causing market chaos in Forex, equities and other financial assets. There is a herd mentality in trading and when the herd doesn’t march in an unified direction chaos happens.

Most institutional players want calm, they want tranquil trading conditions so they can manage their clients’ money quietly. Bonds, equities and indices, real estate holdings via REITs, and gold make up a large part of their holdings.

Most U.S pension funds for instance have mandates to be positioned into a large amount of quiet investment vehicles which do not trade with wild price ranges. They seek steady returns from their institutional investors that can be counted on in a quantitative manner to demonstrate to their clients.

Large financial institutions are allowed sometimes to trade 2 to 4% of their holdings in different categories of speculative investments – such as start-ups, allocate cash to hedge funds they trust, small cap stocks they might know about, etc., depending on the exact mandates agreed upon.

Yes, hedge fund managers like Bill Ackman and investor Michael Burry get a lot of attention when they bet against the markets, but believe it or not they are small fish in a large ocean a lot of the time. They are good at what they do, but their speculative positions cannot be mirrored by most financial institutions or small day traders.

Ackman and Burry may be trading billions, but remember institutional financial companies including pension funds when combined total approximately 80% of market cap. Institutional trading decisions can cause massive waves in the financial world, but they actually seek calm seas.

When markets become volatile this often means institutional traders are not comfortable and their behavioral sentiment is fragile. Forex for example is often affected by financial institutions moving money as they handle export and import transactions for companies, but transactions are often done to buy and sell equities too. The Bank of International Settlements estimated an average around 7.5 trillion USD in value was traded in Forex everyday in 2022.

Day traders should not take it personally when the markets move against them, instead they should look to try and mirror the sentiment of larger financial movers. However, knowing and timing financial institution decisions is elusive because short term compared to long term considerations are often different.

Most traders are merely betting on the price action the large institutional funds are undertaking via the direction of the marketplace. Day trading for most retail speculators remains dangerous. A solid fundamental understanding of market ‘forces’ can allow smaller traders to feel more comfortable.
